Beach hotels and restaurants are a short distance away from the Nidahasa Villa. The Hotel Blue Water, Wadduwa is a 5***hotel and operates a good lunch buffet. Brief Garden at Alutgama - 45mins drive - is the life time creation of Bevis Bawa the elder brother of the famous Sri Lankan Architect Geoffrey Bawa and is open to the public. It contains some of Bawa’s own sculptures and also works of artists George Keyts and Donald Friend. It is well worth a visit also for its charm and large variety of local plants and trees. You will be assured of a welcome by their knowledgeable and courteous staff and by appointment can be taken over the house by the present owner Dooland De Silva. Lunuganga was the country home of Geoffrey Bawa and is also open to the public. With its extensive gardens and artful use of light and space it provides a splendid opportunity to appreciate the talent of this famous architect. About 20km south of Wadduwa you can take a boat rip up the Madhu Ganga and visit the Koduwa Vihara Temple on an island in the river. 19th century Veeragaha Temple on road to Horana Kalutara South - about half hours - drive away is where one finds the Ganatilaka Vihara Dagoba. The only hollow dagoba in the world it is lined inside by Jakata cartoons of 74 murals telling the story of Buddha. Beruwala – about 45 minutes drive - was believed to be the first Moorish settlement on the Island, established by Arab traders in about the 8th century A.D. On a rocky headland is the Kchchimalai Mosque. It contains the tomb of Sheik Ashareth, a saint whose coffin was said to have been washed ashore 1,000 years ago. About an hours drive south is the town of Ambalangoda famous for its ‘devil dancers’ and carved masks. The rest house has a lovely rock protected cove for safe swimming. Tours with guide of other nearby Buddhist sites and temples can be arranged. |
